Interview Transcript: “RAW Cleveland, Menagerie”
I'm Jocelyn Staskus, I am an artist. I do photography and drawing. One of the things that I really love to do are large mural-size drawings. It's kind of a compulsion of mine. I get these pieces that come into my head and what happens is they'll come out as sketches and they'll live as a sketch, but the problem is they almost vibrate. They have a life of their own and they're really scary to me at that point as a sketch because they're very desperate to live and they just want to be bigger. So I turn them into these large life-size, mural-size drawings where the figures in there are life-size and it's almost like you can walk into the space, and that's when they're free. They live and they're less scary.
I've been drawing ever since I was very young. I was always the kid at the table covered with paper and crayons and pencils and markers. When I was young I also started picking up photography, It was part of...it was my fathers, it was his hobby and I loved him so much that I thought maybe I'd make it something of my own and had an eye for it so I went and I did that. I ended up going to school for it and... it's [art] just something that I have to do. There's an inner drive.
My inspirations, a lot of the time it's things that are going on around me, the emotions that they create or... I have a lot of... I internalize a lot of things. I internalize a lot of stress and they come out as weird drawings, weird creatures, weird spaces, and it's just... I guess the way that inside of my mind - the mind that I can't see – it's just the way it expresses those things.
I'll start drawing something and I'll just be gone. I'll be in my own headspace for hours on end and I get lost in it and that's really enjoyable for me, and then being able to share what I do with other people is one of the most exciting parts.
